Unilateral Above-the-Knee Amputee - Descending Stairs

Descending stairs without a railing is an advanced activity, requiring strength, control, and confidence. It should be first done only with a railing.

Instructions:
  1. Approach the top step.
  2. Shift weight to the "sound" leg.
  3. Lead with the prosthesis, stepping down the step with it.
  4. Make sure the prosthetic knee is locked in full extension before applying weight to the prosthesis.
  5. Shift weight to prosthesis and step down with "sound" leg.
  6. Now both legs are on the same step.
  7. Repeat the procedure as needed, always leading with the prosthesis.
